VIDEO: Viewmont Elementary students wish luck to alumni Eagles player before Super Bowl

Students and teachers at Viewmont Elementary in Hickory have a special connection with Eagles’ offensive lineman Landon Dickerson.

A native of Hickory, Dickerson is also an alumnus of Viewmont Elementary School.

In a video filmed last week, Maria Creger and students in her 2nd-grade dual language/immersion (DL/I) class sing the Eagles fight song while wishing him the best of luck in the big game. The video was then sent to Dickerson by Miya Teague, a former Viewmont Elementary employee and friend of the Dickerson family.

Creger had Dickerson as a student in her 1st-grade class, describing him as “smart, funny, outgoing, and definitely athletic.” Keegan O’Brien, a current 1st grader in Creger’s class, is an Eagles fan and is hoping to see them win this year’s Super Bowl; his favorite player also happens to be Dickerson.

“I like the team, and we have a Super Bowl party and eat food,” said O’Brien.

“Do you have a favorite player?” Creger asked.

“Landon Dickerson, because we learn about him in class and see him on TV,” said O’Brien.

Other Viewmont Elementary teachers reminisced about having Dickerson in their classroom, including his 5th-grade teacher, Chelsea Hartness.

“I am just so very proud of Landon.” I was Landon’s fifth-grade teacher at Viewmont Elementary. In the classroom, Landon humbly exhibited those same characteristics: he proved to have an astounding work ethic, and he excelled academically. I could always count on Landon to be a leader; he was courteous, thoughtful, and honest. “Landon may be an Eagle now, but once a Viewmont Bear, always a Viewmont Bear!” said Hartness.

Dickerson’s former high school football coach said he is not surprised at how quickly the Eagles’ guard has reached his potential.

“I coached Landon for 2 years in high school. He is by far the best player I’ve ever coached. I knew he had the tools at an early age to reach the potential he’s at now,” said Mike Helms.

The Philadelphia Eagles will face off against the Kansas City Chiefs for Super Bowl 57 on Sunday, February 12 at 6:30 p.m.
