From walk-on to top runner: Waxhaw woman shines at High Point University

CHARLOTTE — A graduate from Waxhaw’s Cuthbertson High School is making waves in the collegiate cross country scene after earning Big South Conference honors this fall, and it all started with a last-ditch opportunity.

Charli Montalvo wasn’t recruited by any Division 1 programs when she ran cross country at Cuthbertson. She watched as her teammates got collegiate offers, but she kept training and working toward her goal of running at the next level.

Her chance came with a walk-on opportunity at High Point University. Montalvo was able to join the women’s cross country team, and she made the most of her chance.

Montalvo has had an incredible season this fall, and she was just named the Division One Women’s Cross Country Freshman of the Year for the Big South Conference.
