WAXHAW, N.C. — The Town of Waxhaw has canceled its Autumn Treasures fall festival scheduled for Saturday due to forecast inclement weather associated with Hurricane Isaias.
Town officials announced Friday that the event will not be rescheduled.
“The safety of our attendees, vendors, staff, volunteers and everyone involved in the event is our top priority,” Town of Waxhaw officials said in a statement.
Town officials cited logistical challenges and the high number of participants as the reason the event cannot be moved to a later date.
Megann Marsalis was out shopping in downtown Waxhaw on Friday with her daughter and a friend.
“We were going to come down whether it was raining or not and just have fun,” Marsalis said.
The group had planned to head back Saturday for the popular outdoor fall event for all ages. “It’s disappointing it got canceled, because I think most vendors have a plan B,” Marsalis said.
Marsalis said she used to sell jewelry at the festival.
Her friend, Markie Henry, used to own a business there and said the event provides a big boost to vendors.
“Especially after owning the (Waxhaw Tap House). I know we depend on those big days to bring in the crowds. Everyone wants to stop in and stop in the shops as well as be on the street,” Henry said.
The town said the event can’t be moved to Sunday or rescheduled.
“Because of the number of people involved and the logistics required to coordinate the event, Autumn Treasures will not be rescheduled,” the town stated in a release.
The owner of 88A Boutique, Nicole Virricchio, hopes some people still brave the rain and show up for downtown businesses.
“Come down,” she said. “Bring your umbrella. We’re always open in Waxhaw.”
Municipal leaders acknowledged the widespread disappointment across the community following the cancellation, specifically referencing those involved in preparations.
“We share in the disappointment of our vendors, staff, volunteers, downtown businesses and everyone who helps make this event possible,” officials said, adding, “We look forward to seeing you at next year’s festival.”
