Which U.S. House seats in North Carolina flipped to Democrats?

CHARLOTTE — Voters 18 to 29 years old saw the largest shift from Republican to Democrat of any age group in this election, according to a New York Times analysis. The shift was more than 30 percentage points compared to the 2024 election, which helped fuel a number of Democratic victories in Congress.

The results are shocking. Of the 14 congressional seats from North Carolina, there were 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats going into Tuesday’s election. After the recounts, those numbers could flip entirely.

In District 5, which runs from Lenoir to Boone. Virginia Foxx, one of the oldest lawmakers in Congress at 83, trails her Democratic opponent Chuck Hubbard by 99 votes, or 0.04%. That one is headed for a recount.

In District 6, which stretches from Salisbury to Kannapolis to northern Concord, Democrat Cyril Jefferson beat Republican incumbent Addison McDowell.

District 9 is the center of the state, but it’s a crucial loss for Republicans. The incumbent Richard Hudson chairs the ‘National Republican Congressional Committee.’ He lost to Democrat Army veteran Richard Ojeda by more than 2 points.

District 11 is western North Carolina, including Avery County, and another Republican seat that flipped. Former Congressman Chuck Edwards ended his re-election campaign after an ethics investigation found he harassed several staffers. Democratic farmer Jamie Ager will become Asheville’s new congressman.

District 14 may be the biggest upset of the night. Republican former NC State House Speaker Tim Moore lost to Democrat Lakesha Womack by more than 2 points.

North Carolina Republicans redrew the district maps earlier this year after President Donald Trump’s request, to make them “more favorable” to Republicans. But all this does is likely lead to more gridlock, since President Trump can veto any legislation passed by the Democrats in Congress.
