Woman charged with reckless driving after fatal collision in west Charlotte, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a fatal collision that occurred in west Charlotte Monday evening.

Police said they responded to Alleghany Street at approximately 5:46 p.m. after receiving reports about a collision.

At the scene, police said they found a U-Haul that was heavily damaged in the front as well as on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

The driver of the U-Haul was partially ejected from the vehicle and a passenger was fully ejected onto a grassy area nearby, according to police.

The passenger, later identified as Michael Stinson, was taken to Atrium Health where he later died.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Tisha Waddell, was also taken to Atrium Health. Their condition is unknown at this time.

An initial investigation revealed that the U-Haul was speeding while traveling west on Alleghany Street when it went left of center and ran off the right side of the road striking two trees.

The U-Haul then went through a fence on Harding High School and struck two other trees before finally coming to a stop.

Police said Waddell has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, reckless driving, and possessing an open container of alcohol in the passenger area of a motor vehicle.

An investigation into this incident is active and ongoing. Anyone with additional information about this crash is asked to call Detective Buckley at 704-432-2169 extension 6.
