Woman killed in apparent drive-by shooting, Hickory police say

HICKORY, N.C. — Police said a mother was killed after being hit by a bullet in an apparent drive-by shooting Wednesday night in Hickory.

Just before 11 p.m., officers responded to a home on 17th Street NW after receiving a 911 call that a woman had been shot.

When police got to the home they found 27-year-old India Kynar Rice inside suffering from a single gunshot wound.

Catawba County EMS arrived a short time later and pronounced her dead at the scene.

Detectives said five adults and two children were inside the house when someone fired multiple rounds into it from a vehicle that was traveling on 17th Street NW.

Channel 9 visited the scene Thursday morning and counted more than a dozen bullet holes outside the home. Neighbors said they heard at least eight shots.

“To begin with, I just thought it was firecrackers, but this has been going on at this house for the last year,” said neighbor Gary Watson. “We’ve had shootings around this house.”

Police said there is no suspect information to release at this time. Nobody else was hurt.
