Husband charged with wife's homicide, Charlotte's 50th of 2017

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man has been charged with his wife’s murder after the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said on Wednesday.

Officers responded to assist with a Medic call on July 7 on Dusty Trail Road in north Charlotte.

Police found Heidi May Morton unresponsive in a home and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Homicide detectives and the crime scene unit were called to collect evidence.

As a result of the investigation, and in consultation with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office, detectives determined that Morton was the victim of a homicide.

Her husband, Alton Ulysses Morton Jr., voluntarily turned himself into police, where he was interviewed.

At the end of the interview, he was charged with murder.

Police have not said how Heidi Morton died or the circumstances surrounding her death.

Her death marks Charlotte's 50th homicide of 2017.
