Worker killed in trench collapse at housing development near Albemarle

STANLY COUNTY, N.C. — A construction worker at a housing development near Albemarle is dead after a trench collapsed Tuesday morning, according to authorities in Stanly County.

The incident happened a little after 8:30 a.m. at a construction area near Hatley Farm Road, which is northeast of Charlotte.

Stanly County Emergency Services Director Michael Roark told Channel 9 that the crew member was working in the trench when it collapsed. The worker, later identified as Joshua Kerry Brindle, was trapped, but died from his injuries.

Officials said the company Brindle was working for was his father’s company.

Roark said the Concord Urban Search and Rescue Team’s Trench Rescue Unit was called to the scene along with Stanly Rescue, the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office, and emergency medical services.

It’s not clear what led to the trench collapse, but Roark told Channel 9 that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been contacted. On Thursday, OSHA confirmed it is investigating the incident.
