Oil Spill Raises Price Of Seafood

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is impacting the price of seafood in North Carolina.

Chris Vanella, the executive chef at Boudreaux's Restaurant in NoDa, said his local seafood distributor, Inland Seafood, has raised its prices on foods like oysters and shrimp.

Inland said the disaster is causing a shortage in seafood, which in turn has caused a hike in prices.

"We're probably up 30 percent to 40 percent on some of our products," said Brent Schilb, general manager of Inland Seafood.

Vanella said the cost has gone up so drastically that he's had to stop serving oysters.

"Unfortunately, the oysters are out of our price range right now to be able to offer this product to [customers] any longer," Vanella said.

Vanella said if the oil spill is not stopped soon, the restaurant will eventually have to pass the higher costs on to their customers.
