Hurricane Dorian: Woman opens Bahamas home to 97 abandoned dogs

NASSAU, Bahamas — One woman in the Bahamas opened her home to nearly 100 furry friends as Hurricane Dorian bears down on the island.

ABC News reported Chella Phillips brought 97 homeless and abandoned dogs into her home.

"It was either leave the dogs on the street to fend for themselves...or do something about it," Phillips said in a phone interview with ABC News. "I just want these dogs to be safe. I could care less about the dog poop and pee in my house."

Phillips posted about getting the dogs in her home Sunday on Facebook. According to her post, she runs a dog rescue called The Voiceless Dogs of Nassau, Bahamas, and in another post said she brought in as many dogs as possible, but many remain in the streets.

"The dogs get vetted, vaccinated and from there they come to live at my refuge until I am able to find a rescue willing to help me with them in the States," according to the organization's Facebook page. "Countless homeless dogs have left the streets of Nassau and they are now enjoying life being loved and cared (for) by their families."

Phillips said her organization has rescued more than 1,000 dogs in the last four years.

WFTS reported that Phillips said there has been flooding in her home and she is without power, but everything is OK otherwise.

Phillips says the attention her story has received is going a long way to bring attention to her organization.

"Thank you for the outpouring support and heartfelt prayers from so many people that don't even know us, my post from yesterday went viral and total strangers are reaching out to us giving us the exposure that we need so bad," she wrote.
