A New York-based non-profit wiped out medical debt for thousands of families in Chicago.
WLS reported RIP Medical Debt Relief worked with local churches in Chicago to provide relief to 5,888 families.
Those churches, which included Trinity United Church of Christ, raised $38,000 to clear out the debt.
"We were able to raise funds to purchase 5.3 million worth of debt in the city of Chicago and Cook County," Dr. Otis Moss III of Trinity United Church of Christ said in an announcement to churchgoers Sunday, WGN reported.
According to WGN, the $38,000 raised was enough to wipe out the $5.3 million in debt.
"They will receive a very special card before Thanksgiving -- completely anonymous," Moss said. "They don't know this is coming. The card will simply say, 'Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. We want you to know all your debts have been forgiven."
The average debt for each family was $907, WGN reported. The news comes more than a week after it was reported Northview Church in Indiana worked with RIP Medical Debt to wipe out $7.8 million in medical debt for 5,940 families.
