Woman threatens officer ‘with a visit from the KKK' during arrest

DELAND, Fla. — A Florida woman faces multiple charges after she allegedly threatened a deputy with a "visit from the KKK" during an arrest, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched to a home in DeLand just before midnight on February 7 in response to a disturbance.

Upon arrival, a deputy made contact with the driver of a vehicle that had its headlights on reversing into the property. The deputy immediately detected the odor of alcohol coming from the driver identified as Julie Edwards, 53, according to an arrest report.

Edwards was handcuffed after she refused to provide a sample of her breath. The arrest report said that Edwards also dropped to the ground and refused to get back up despite commands. The deputy received assistance from another deputy to get Edwards to stand on her feet.

As the deputy attempted to file paperwork, Edwards told him that the "Ku Klux Klan would be seeing him and burning crosses on his property." She also used a racial slur to the African-American deputy in regards to slavery, the arrest report said.

Edwards faces preliminary charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, prior refusal to submit to testing, threats against an officer and resisting an officer without violence.
