Metallica gives ‘Stranger Things’ star Joseph Quinn guitar at backstage jam session

CHICAGO — “Stranger Things” actor Joseph Quinn got to live a dream at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago.

Quinn, 29, whose Eddie Munson character played a blistering version of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” in the season 4 finale of “Stranger Things,” got to meet the band backstage at the music festival, Rolling Stone reported.

The metal band legends jammed backstage with the actor on Thursday and bassist Robert Trujillo gave Quinn a custom B.C. Rich guitar like the one the actor played on the show, Entertainment Tonight reported.

“I’m a big fan of (”Stranger Things”). Have been since season 1,” Metallica lead singer James Hetfield told Quinn. “My kids and I, it’s a bonding experience for us.”

Quinn was equally effusive with his praise, Deadline reported.

“Thank you so much for letting us use the track,” Quinn told the band.

Quinn was invited to jam in the band’s tuning room before Metallica’s set at Chicago’s Grant Park, Rolling Stone reported. The actor more than held his own between lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and Hetfield.

“We’d like to make an announcement,” drummer and band co-founder Lars Ulrich joked, according to the magazine. “Metallica is now a five-piece.”

Ulrich also gave Quinn an all-access pass that will allow him to attend any of Metallica’s shows, Rolling Stone reported.

“It was amazing! Opportunities to play ‘Master of Puppets’ with the most iconic metal band of all time don’t come around very often,” Quinn told Netflix’s Tudum. “A story for the grandkids.”

The meeting came weeks after Metallica paid tribute on TikTok to the scene in which Quinn’s character perform the band’s 1986 track in the Upside Down in an effort to distract a swarm of demobats, Entertainment Tonight reported. In that TikTok video, the band plays “Master of Puppets” alongside scenes from Munson’s performance.
