Son of boxer Evander Holyfield signs with Philadelphia Eagles

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles signed former University of Georgia running back Elijah Holyfield -- the son of former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield -- to a deal Tuesday, bolstering its running game heading into the playoffs.

Elijah Holyfield, who was signed as a free agent by the Carolina Panthers in 2019 and was on the team’s practice squad, became a free agent this week, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Holyfield rushed for 1,018 yards during his junior year at Georgia. He declared for the NFL draft but was not taken by any teams, and signed with Carolina as a free agent.

To make room for Holyfield, the Eagles placed defensive end Daeshon Hall on injured reserve, the team said.

The Eagles, who will host the Seattle Seahawks in a wild-card game Sunday afternoon, are expected to have Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard available in the backfield. However, Sanders injured his ankle during Philadelphia’s victory against the New York Giants, while Howard had one carry that was negated by a penalty, the Inquirer reported.
