Prep for brake failure at our Toyota Service Center in Charlotte!

Driving down the road and facing that terrifying situation where your brake isn’t responsive is a horrible place to be in! We know that you can prevent it by coming into our Charlotte Toyota Service Center and have our certified technicians fix your ride. However, these incidents aren’t predictable and our Charlotte Toyota Service Technicians want to ensure you know how what to do in a situation like this. Check out the suggested procedure to get your car to stop safely:
  • Slow down – If you notice your brake is not responsive, remove your foot from the gas pedal. Allow the car to slow down on it's on. If you're able to, shift the car into a lower gear.
  • Hazard lights – Turn on your hazard or emergency lights. This helps you warn other drivers that you're having car issues. Use the honk to keep cars distant from you.
  • Pulse brake – Try stepping on the brake again. Apply force to create pressure. You may also pump on the brakes to help add pressure and possibly make your brakes work.
  • Move out of traffic – Try to find your way out of heavy traffic and into an empty area. A place where you have more room to slow down and stop your car safely. If you're on the highway, try to make your way out of it or drive on the shoulder. Safely switch lanes! Don't do it too fast. Switching lanes helps create friction and slow down the car. However, you might lose control of the car if you switch too fast.
  • Use your surroundings – If you're around grassy areas try driving in and out of it. CAREFULLY! The grass can help with the friction and slow down the car.
  • Emergency brakes – Once you have slowed down from the initial speed and you're in a safe area you can try your emergency brake. SLOWLY pull or push on the emergency brake. The emergency brake stops the rear wheels, using it too fast can be dangerous.
