CHARLOTTE, N.C. — SATURDAY: Extreme heat continues to hover the Carolinas.
Temperatures reached 96 degrees with the heat index rising above 100, which is well above average. This was the third day in a row at 96 degrees.
In some areas, the heat index was as high as 103 degrees.
A cooling storm briefly sat over the foothills, but it ran out of steam. The storm created wind gusts of 40-50 mph.
It felt closer to 105 degrees in some areas.
As of now, there aren't any air quality alerts.
SUNDAY: Sunday will be another hot and muggy day, with highs near 95 degrees.
A few afternoon storms are possible.
As always this time of year, storms could contain very heavy rain, frequent lightning and strong damaging wind gusts.
NEXT WEEK: A front is forecast to approach early next week, bringing more scattered afternoon storms.
There could be slight relief from the oppressive heat by Wednesday. Temperatures will be closer to average in the upper 80s.
