CLT250 Legacy Project: YMCA Y Readers ‘reading buddies' sought

Charlotte is celebrating its 250th anniversary and provides an opportunity for Charlotte to recognize its past, understand its present and imagine its future.
SHARE Charlotte chose 40 local nonprofit organizations that play a significant role in strengthening the city, and how the community, local businesses, corporations, foundations, groups and individuals can support their vision for CLT250.
The CLT250 legacy projects have been designed to leave a legacy on Charlotte.
One legacy project is the YMCA Y Readers, a nationally recognized literacy program that serves students in grades K-3 who are reading below grade level. The program operates as a six-week summer camp, as well as a before/after school program.
They hope to gather 250 YMCA Y Readers “reading buddies” to help students learn how to read and act as supportive role models to other students.
Each Y Reader costs $1,450.  All programming is offered to families at no cost; it is fully funded by individual gifts, corporate donations and grants. Funding is appreciated, but recruiting volunteers is the primary goal of this project.
Third grade reading proficiency is a critical predictor of success in school, career and life.  Children who are not reading at grade level by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.  The Y is determined to change the outcome for children most at risk of falling behind.
