‘I don’t want the dream to die’: Woman continues to lead MLK celebrations in Charlotte after 30 years

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a normal year, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day would be marked in Charlotte by a parade and a range of other celebrations and service events. The COVID-19 pandemic forced much of that to be scaled back this year.

For more than 30 years, Delores Reid-Smith has been leading Charlotte’s annual celebration of Dr. Kings life and mission.

“As long as I can participate, I want to keep Dr. King alive in the minds of young people,” Reid-Smith said. “They know Dr. MLK but they don’t always know what he stood for, what he fought for and inevitably, what he died for.”

In the video at the top of the page, reporter Mark Becker introduces us to the woman who has been leading Charlotte’s celebration of Dr. King for three decades and how that fight grew into a mission to spread his message through the Queen City.
