• Black-owned business spotlight: Red Pen Graphics

    Updated:

Just a few miles away from North Mecklenburg High School on Old Statesville Road, former graduate Kevin “CJ” Pate is busy fulfilling orders at his printing shop.

    [SPECIAL SECTION: Black History Month]

The owner of Red Pen Graphics says he never really considered himself to be an artist until a teacher took notice of his work.

That recognition inspired Pate to study digital printing and publishing at North Carolina A&T State University.

    Black-owned business profiles:

After graduating from college, he worked at some of the larger printing and graphics companies in Charlotte before opening his own business in 2012.

His company specializes in designing and installing signs, vehicle wraps and banners.

Pate’s clients include Belk and Bottle Cap Restaurant Group. Recently, he worked with the NBA during All-Star Weekend in Charlotte.
