A lone figure appears along a rugged hiking trail on Grandfather Mountain, his rugged beard frames a grave countenance. As the sun begins to set and other hikers pass by making their way down the mountain, he makes no effort to speak or acknowledge them. Curiously, the hikers glance back to take one last look at the solemn stranger, but he’s mysteriously disappeared.
Over the years, the story of the phantom hiker has been an unsolved mystery of the Blue Ridge. Many hikers claim to have encountered the ghostly figure on the mountain trails, but none have been able to explain who he is or why he haunts the forest.
Locals believe the ghost is the spirit of a man who fell to his death while hiking alone and whose body was never found. From there the trail goes cold as to what actually happened to cause the man to linger.
If you’re ever hiking Grandfather Mountain at dusk, keep a look out for the phantom.
