CHARLOTTE — Channel 9 is investigating the support both presidential candidates are getting from people in North Carolina.
Channel 9 sifted through thousands of campaign donations from the Federal Election Commission and discovered workers at major local companies have put their wallets behind one candidate in particular.
Hillary Clinton far ahead in donations, raising $2.36 million in North Carolina's individual donations to Donald Trump's $284,000.
Clinton has collected more than $1 million in South Carolina, compared to Trump's $231,000.
"I think he thought for the longest time he didn't need to fundraise," said Susan L. Roberts, Davidson College associate professor of political science.
Trump may be regretting that now, as Clinton has more money for attack ads, Roberts said.
Employees of Charlotte's bigger companies are supporting Clinton more. For example:
- Bank of America employees: $11,500 to Clinton
- City of Charlotte employees: $6,600 to Clinton
- Carolinas Healthcare System employees: $8,800 to Clinton.
- Duke Energy employees: $9,300 to Clinton. $500 to Trump
- Wells Fargo employees: $17,000 to Clinton. $5,800 to Trump.
"I think there is no love lost," Roberts said on why more money has gone to Clinton. "Trump is anti-Wall Street. "Everybody has ties to Wall Street."
Trump has said Clinton is owned by Wall Street and that Wall Street has caused tremendous problems for Americans.
Big banks and corporations in Charlotte don't like that kind of talk and it doesn't help Trump that those companies are based in a heavily Democratic city. Corporate leadership also favored Clinton.
Clinton got more than $13,000 from executives at Belk, Carolinas Healthcare System, Duke Energy and Planned Parenthood.
They did not donate any money to Trump.
Clinton's campaign managers said they are spending that money on staff for 30 campaign offices around the state. The Trump campaign staff never got back to Channel 9 about what they're doing with money raised in the Carolinas.
