CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A local man paid a company close to $3,000 to help get rid of his timeshare, but it turns out he had to shell out even more money for the company's mistakes.
Bobby Helms said his wood pallets business leaves little time to vacation and use his Florida timeshare.
He and his wife, Ann, considered selling the timeshare but found no buyers.
So, the pair paid a company to take it off of their hands.
"We paid $2,795 for them to take it," said Helms.
The company is Transfer Smart. It had Helms sign over the timeshare and would assume his $500 yearly maintenance fees, but Helms said for two years that Transfer Smart never paid maintenance and late fees totaling $1,100, so, he had to pay them.
"They just did not seem to care. I would tell them that I shouldn't be paying it because they had it. They said, you have to," said Helms.
Action 9 checked the company's website, which has a lot of testimonials from satisfied customers.
However, the Better Business Bureau gave the company a C-minus rating and lists 58 complaints, many about transfer problems like Helms'.
Action 9 contacted Transfer Smart.
A spokesperson blamed a third party company for "dropping the ball" on Helms' transfer and others.
Transfer Smart then sent Helms a $1,100 reimbursement and said his transfer had been completed.
Helms' advice on timeshare transfer companies is, "Really know what you are getting into."
