Members left scrambling after popular Ballantyne gym goes out of business

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A popular Ballantyne gym went out of business suddenly.

UFC Gym, at the corner of Providence Road West and Lancaster Highway, posted a sign on the door, saying "Dear Members, We Are Closed For Business Please See Facebook For Information Or Your Email."

"I was surprised," member Nancy Ohmes told Action 9 investigator Jason Stoogenke. "It was well attended. It was a happy place to be. It seemed like they were doing well."

She said she paid hundreds of dollars up front for personal training and that her friend paid more.

"I think she spent a little over $1,000 and she definitely would like to get that money back," Ohmes said.

UFC sent members a letter, saying it had trouble refinancing.

It promised to do the right thing for members.

"We know those people. We feel like they'll do the right thing, but we just don't know yet," Ohmes said.

Under North Carolina law, gyms are supposed to be bonded.

Stoogenke was told UFC is, so members should be able to get refunds.

Also under the law, gyms are allowed to transfer memberships to another similar gym as long as it's within eight  miles.
UFC is transferring memberships to Everlasting Changes in Fort Mill.

UFC has also made arrangements with 4MFit in Indian Trail, but that's about 16 miles away

If you have problem with getting money back from UFC or its insurer, Great American Insurance Company, make sure you tell Stoogenke.  Reach him on Facebook, Jason Stoogenke WSOC TV Reporter, or email him at Action9@WSOC-TV.com.
