CORNELIUS, N.C. — The annual Charlotte Asian Festival and Charlotte Dragon Boat Festival were held Saturday at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius.
This marked the 13th year of the annual family-oriented Charlotte Asian Festival, which celebrates Asian cultures, roots and history.
In 2006, the festival was combined with the Dragon Boat Festival, in which teams compete in canoe-like boats that are colorfully painted and decorated with a dragon’s head on the front and a tail on the back.
Dragon boat racing originated more than 2,300 years ago on the rivers of southern China and is an important part of the Chinese traditional calendar.
Saturday’s races kicked off at 9 a.m.
The Charlotte Asian Festival and Dragon Boat Festival Race are organized by the Carolinas Asian-American Chamber of Commerce, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation and the Charlotte Dragon Boat Association.
