NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — (AP) North Myrtle Beach has banned the use of beach tents on the shore during the summer.
City council voted Monday to ban the use of any device to provide shade other than beach umbrellas between May 15 and Sept. 15. Umbrellas can have a diameter of no more than 9 feet.
That means large collapsible beach tents - the type seen at football tailgate parties - can no longer be used on the beachfront during the summer.
The use of such tents has been debated along the Grand Strand because of concerns they can block emergency vehicles from moving along the beach.
Horry County is considering banning tents year round. There's also a proposal in Myrtle Beach to ban the tents.
