Chester Woman Fights Off Attacker In Her Home

CHESTER, S.C.,None — Marquita Moffatt told Eyewitness News she was asleep early Saturday morning when a man appeared in her bedroom at her Chester apartment.

"He stood on a trash can and came in my child's bedroom window," Moffatt said. "I was scared. I laid there crying."

She recognized the man as someone she knew but hadn't seen in more than a year, she said. She told Chester police that the man grabbed her and tried to pull her clothes off and rape her.

"I kicked him and hit him, jammed my finger real bad, then grabbed a golf club," she said.

That's when the man ran from her apartment and disappeared down York Street, she said.

Sheriff's deputies told Eyewitness News that wasn't the only attack on a woman in Chester County that Saturday morning. They were also called to the B and D trailer park on the J.A. Cochran Bypass. A woman told deputies that she had met a man after a friend's birthday party and he'd asked her for a ride home.

The man, now identified as 27-year-old Keith Caldwell, told her he lived at B and D trailer park. Once there, deputies said Caldwell dragged the woman out of her car, raped and robbed her, then ran.

Chester police arrested Caldwell on Tuesday morning at his mother's home on Ashford Road. Sheriff Richard Smith said the rape victim picked Caldwell out of a photo lineup as her attacker.

Moffatt also recognized him and gave police his name. She said she has no idea why a man she once knew as a friend would hurt anyone.

"I don't know what happened to him, but something has got to be done. I hope he gets some help," she said.

Caldwell is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, strong-armed robbery, breaking and entering and other charges. Late Tuesday, a judge denied bond for Caldwell.
