Cold Rain Can't Stop Egypt Protesters From Marching In Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Three dozen people marched in Marshall Park in uptown Charlotte on Friday afternoon to support calls for Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak to resign.

People from all backgrounds and ages came out in the damp and cold weather to support the ongoing antigovernment protests in Egypt.

Protesters held umbrellas as well as signs.

Protester Kareem Abdelnabi said, "If they can withstand the bullets and bombs and what's going on over there then we can take the freezing rain and the cold," said Kareem Abdelnabi. "It's only two hours. They (the protesters in Egypt) have been going at it for two weeks."

Abdelnabi has relatives and friends in Egyptian city of Alexandria. He spoke with some of them moments before he headed for the rally.

"They're kind of feeling just drawn out," said Abdelnabi. "A lot of excitement was going on and enthusiasm was happening in the very beginning and they were so excited about this reform and what not, but now it's more concern and worry because a lot of the thugs and criminals are out on the streets."

Jibril Hough helped organize the rally in Charlotte.

"The people in Egypt need to know that they are not standing alone," said Hough.

He said protesters were planning to send petitions to local members of Congress encouraging them to support political reform in Egypt.
