Irina "Ira" Yarmolenko's Death: Timeline of Events

• May 5, 2008, 9:45 a.m.: Yarmolenko is seen on UNC Charlotte campus taking an exam.

• May 5, 2008, 10:18 a.m.: Yarmolenko stops at a credit union.

• May 5, 2008, 10:35 a.m.: Yarmolenko stops at a Goodwill store on University City Boulevard.

• May 5, 2008, 10:50 a.m.: Yarmolenko stops at Jackson's Java, where she worked, near campus.

• May 5, 2008, 1:15 p.m.: Two people on Jet Skis finds Yarmolenko's body on the banks of the Catawba River in Mount Holly.

• May 6, 2008: Investigators announce that the body was identified as Yarmolenko.

• May 8, 2008: An autopsy report reveals that Yarmolenko died from asphyxiation.

• May 16, 2008: UNCC announces a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in connection with Yarmolenko's death.

• June 17, 2008: Mount Holly police announce that the governor's office has approved an additional $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, bringing the total to $15,000.

• Dec. 12, 2008: Mark Carver and Neal Cassada, who are cousins, are arrested and charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy in connection with Yarmolenko's death. Both deny the charges.

• Feb. 2, 2009: In a bond hearing for Carver and Cassada, SBI agents reveal for the first time that Yarmolenko likely went to the river bank where her body was found to work on a photography project. Prior to this disclosure, she appeared to have no connection to the area. An agent also testifies that Carver and Cassada were fishing nearby.

• Feb. 5, 2009: Judge sets both men's bond at $100,000 and Cassada bonds out of jail. Carver's bond had previously been set at $1 million, while no bond was initially set for Cassada.

• Feb. 6, 2009: Carver bonds out of jail.

• May 2, 2009: Friends and family members gather at the Yarmolenko family home in the Chapel Hill area in honor of the slain student's 21st birthday.

• May 7, 2009: The SBI says a bungee cord, a ribbon and a sweatshirt drawstring were found around Yarmolenko's neck. Cassada was excluded as a match to DNA found on the bungee cord and drawstring, the SBI says, and also to DNA found under Yarmolenko's fingernails. The documents do not mention Carver.

• Oct. 10, 2010: Neal Cassada died at age 55 at his Mount Holly home. He was set to stand trial the next day for murder in Yarmolenko's death.

• March 14, 2011: Mark Carver's trial begins.

• March 18, 2011: Closing arguments are given and jurors begin deliberating.

• March 21, 2011: Jury finds Carver guilty of first-degree murder.
