Local group fighting to get Confederate monument moved in Newton

NEWTON, N.C. — The Truth and Reconciliation Committee is working to get a Confederate memorial in downtown Newton removed.

They told Channel 9 they have over 1000 signatures and want county leaders to take action quickly.

Burke County officials said they own the property where the Confederate monument stands, but they don’t know who owns monument itself.

The monument will not be on the agenda at the upcoming commissioners meeting, but the group plans to talk about it.
