Local Job Training Program Helps Teens Find Summer Work

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Teenagers may have a harder time landing a summer job this year.

Unemployment in Mecklenburg County is still hovering in double-digits. So people involved with job training say youngsters may find themselves up against a lot more experienced workers for those same summer jobs this year.

Michael Johnson Jr. feels lucky he got his pizza job in Cotswold. He said, "I'm just that much closer to doing what I want to do in my life."

He credits Goodwill's Youth Job Connection. It's a free program for 14 to 21 year olds. Youngsters can take workshops on what to wear to interviews, resume writing, customer service, and working in retail. They also get access to computers, phones, fax machines, and career counselors.

Last year, Goodwill worked with roughly 1,400 youngsters. Learn more about the Youth Job Connection program and register for a workshop HERE.
