Police: Man killed, 2 hurt after fight leads to gunfire in north Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Police are working to figure out who shot three people in north Charlotte late Friday night, leaving one dead.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. in a convenience store parking lot on LD Parker Drive, off Statesville Avenue.

Police said 19-year-old Edward Lopez-Cole died, the city’s 81st homicide this year, and two women were hurt.

Authorities said the shooting happened during a fight between the victim and the shooter. Police believe the two women were bystanders and tried to intervene, but they were shot.

They were taken to the hospital, but they are expected to be OK.

Officers on scene pleaded with the public to find non-violent ways to settle their arguments.

“It began with a verbal dispute and it turned into gunfire,” CMPD Maj. Ryan Butler said. “We don’t need any more of that in this city. Please watch out for each other. Nothing is worth your life.”

Police are using witness statements and video evidence at the scene to track down the shooter.

No arrests have been made.
