15 companies vie for potential Eastland Mall site development

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — City leaders are trying to pump new life into the former Eastland Mall site.

Last year, Channel 9 reported the city sold more than 11 acres of the property to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for a new school.

Through an open-records request, Channel 9 has learned 15 companies are vying to shape the remaining 69 acres of the property.

The city asked these 15 companies for their experience in creating redevelopment plans for large areas over the past five years.

City leaders also asked if the companies have ever had plans that have included a K-8 school and parks.

The potential companies are American Metroplan, BCT Architects, Cooper Carry, Design Collective, Design Workshop Inc., EDSA, HR&A, Jacobs, MKSK, MXD Development Strategists Ltd., Odell Associates Inc., RKG Associates Inc., Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP, Stantec Consulting Services and Torti Gallas and Partners.

Some of the developers have worked on high-profile projects.

HR&A helped develop the rail trail in South End.

Cooper Carry planned 51 acres of redevelopment in Alexandria, Virginia, for Landmark Mall.

BCT served as the designer and architect for five waterfront buildings at the National Harbor.

Charlotte city leaders are not committed to any of the developers. City leaders can request more information from them, including pricing.

City leaders are looking for the consultant to provide a plan by October 2017.

The Eastland Mall property is scheduled to be discussed by the end of March.
