19-year-old arrested for secretly filming sex with UNC Charlotte student, sharing video in frat chat

CHARLOTTE — A 19-year-old man faces felony charges after being accused of secretly recording a UNC Charlotte student having sex and sharing the video in a fraternity group chat.

Alexander Michael Evanoff was arrested on two counts of felony secret peeping and one count of disclosing private images.

According to law enforcement affidavits and arrest warrants, Evanoff and a female student were engaging in consensual sex inside her UNC Charlotte dormitory bedroom when he recorded the act on his phone without her knowledge or permission.

An arrest warrant stated the recording occurred where the student had a reasonable expectation of privacy and was created without consent.

Evanoff then sent the sexually explicit video to a Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity Snapchat group chat containing approximately 32 members, according to court documents. The affidavit noted that Evanoff admitted to the actions.

Alexander Michael Evanoff, 19, was placed in the Mecklenburg County Jail on a $10,000 secured bond following his arrest.

University officials confirmed that Evanoff is not currently enrolled in classes at UNC Charlotte.

UNC Charlotte released a statement regarding the arrest and allegations.

“The individual who has been charged is not currently enrolled at the University. The alleged conduct in this case, if true, is reprehensible. It is not what we expect or will tolerate from members of our campus community,” the university stated.

University officials added that any student breaking the law faces criminal charges and potential university discipline, “which includes sanctions up to and including expulsion,” while noting, “We cannot comment further on this case because of federal privacy laws and the ongoing investigation.”

Advocates said cases involving nonconsensual video distribution are part of a growing problem.

Leanna Pai, director of advocacy and clinical services at Safe Alliance, explained that image-based sexual assault involves violations of intimate privacy, including photos and videos shared without consent.

“We’re definitely seeing a trend where there’s an increase in what we call image-based sexual assault,” Pai said. “It’s unfortunately something that is becoming more prevalent because of social media, technology, the ease of access, and it’s something that definitely needs to have more attention and more services and just understanding to address it properly.”

Support resources remain available for individuals affected by sexual assault. The Safe Alliance Hope Line operates 24 hours a day in English and Spanish at 980-771-HOPE.
