2-year-old boy dies after being hit by car in Statesville, police say

STATESVILLE, N.C. — Police are investigating after a 2-year-old boy was hit and killed by a car Tuesday evening in Statesville.

The crash happened just before 6p.m. on 5th Street near Garner Bagnal Boulevard.

According to police, a driver was heading south on 5th street in a 2010 Ford Taurus when she hit 2-year-old Desmond Hayes. Desmond was taken to Davis Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Officials said the incident is being actively investigated by the Statesville Police Department’s Traffic Unit.

The department said it delayed sending a press release to respect the wishes of Desmond’s parents. Officers said their thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Police have not said if the driver is facing any charges.
