Man charged with shooting 28-year-old after argument in Rock Hill, police say

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A man was arrested and charged Wednesday for shooting a 28-year-old man in Rock Hill, police said.

Officers responded just after 2 a.m. on March 23 to a home on Cauthen Street, where they found the victim on the front porch. The man had been shot in his upper chest, according to police.

Neighbor Betty Taylor told Channel 9 that she heard about seven gunshots.

“We came running out and, there was one car that took off up the street it looked like one of those little Kias,” she said “It came from down here, but the shots were down here.”

The victim, who was not been identified, was then taken to a local hospital for his injuries. He was in critical but stable condition Wednesday. He is expected to be OK.

Investigators said the victim was involved in a fight in the road and was leaving in his car when he was shot. He then got out of the vehicle and ran to the home on Cauthen Street for help.

Days later, police determined that Leopold Malachi Cockman, 20, was a suspect in the case. He was arrested in York County on Tuesday and charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a crime of violence, and discharging a weapon into a vehicle.

“I was raised here and when I was a little girl, we knew everybody on the street,” Taylor said. “You could run on the street. We didn’t even lock our doors at night. Now it’s just getting so bad. The crime is getting so bad.”

No other details have been released at this point.
