CHERRYVILLE, N.C. — Three men involved in a corruption scandal that tainted the Cherryville Police Department now know their punishments.
Channel 9 first started following this case more than a year ago when the FBI raided the department and City Hall.
That scandal involved three police officers, a deputy and two other men.
A man who claimed he was helping a friend, and two former officers were sentenced Thursday in Federal Court for their role in agreeing to help transport stolen goods for cash.
Trey Mauney was one of those officers and spouted off expletives at Channel 9 as he left the courthouse after his family and pastor went before a judge asking for mercy after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy and exploitation.
They argued he was a rookie officer who was influenced into wrongdoing by his training officer, Casey Crawford.
Mauney was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison while Crawford received less than three years behind bars.
Prosecutors said Crawford helped orchestrate the deal to offer armed protection while transporting stolen TVs.
John Hendricks was sentenced to two years of probation and six months house arrest for agreeing to help in the escort in exchange for $500.
He is not an officer and claims he only got involved because his friend, Crawford, said he needed a favor.
Three other men, including former Cherryville police officer Frank Dellinger and reserve Gaston County Deputy Wesley Golden, have yet to be sentenced for their roles in the operation.
