Mom charged after abandoned newborn found alive inside plastic bag in Union County

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A 24-year-old woman was charged after an abandoned newborn baby was found alive inside of a plastic bag and hidden under leaves outside of a Marshville home Wednesday afternoon, the Union County Sheriff’s Office said.

Casey Marie Thomas faces charges of attempted murder and felony child abuse after giving birth at home.

Detectives said they believe Thomas put the infant in a plastic bag and hid him outside under leaves.

Deputies said a concerned family member took Thomas to a local hospital after noticing she had lost a lot of blood. Medical professionals said it seemed like she recently gave birth, but Thomas denied it.

The hospital then called the Union County Sheriff’s Office and said they thought Thomas recently gave birth.

Deputies went to her home on East Highway 74 around 2 p.m. after receiving the information from the hospital that a newborn child might be at or near the house. Thomas lived at the home with her grandmother.

While outside the house, deputies heard faint noises that sounded like a crying baby and found the newborn boy inside the bag next to a fence, authorities said.

“Thankfully they heard the cry and it was a very faint sound from what the deputies say," said neighbor Dawn Sistar.

The child was alive with the placenta still attached.

Deputies believe the 7-pound baby had been inside the grocery bag for up to three hours.

Paramedics took the baby to the hospital, where he is being cared for and is in good condition, officials said. The baby is currently in DCC custody.

“I hope that baby has a wonderful life and has somebody that will love and take care of him the way he should,” said Sistar.
