CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A local woman said she trusted a salesman when he said her contract with an alarm company would not be automatically renewed, but the fine print in her contract told a different story.
The woman went to Action 9 to see if she could get out of her contract.
Terri Tessman signed up for a home alarm service three years ago with Vector Security.
Her contract was supposed to expire in January, but when she called Vector's office, they told her she had missed the 30-day cancellation deadline and that it auto renewed for 12 months.
It was all legal and buried in the contracts fine print, which Tessman admits that she didn't read.
Instead she said she relied on the salesman who she said assured her the contract would not auto renew.
"I trusted him. I feel very taken advantage of," said Tessman.
The Better Business Bureau said Tessman is not the only one to complain about Vector's auto renewal contracts.
The company has nearly 80 complaints and an F rating, and for anyone thinking of signing an auto renewal contract…
"You have got a couple of options up front, just strike that out of the contract," said Tom Bartholomy, BBB president.
He said if they won't let you, find a company that will.
After Action 9 got in touch with Vector, they offered Tessman six months of free service and will allow her to cancel any time after that with a 30-day notice.
While Tessman is taking Vector's offer, she is telling others …
"Do not go with anyone that auto renews," she said.
