After delays, DOT workers finally installing lights along I-85

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After months of drivers traveling in the dark, the North Carolina Department of Transportation is finally lighting up area highways.

Channel 9 spotted crews installing new lights overnight along Interstate 85 at the Mecklenburg-Cabarrus county line.

Crews were working to install the lights from that exit all the way the University City Boulevard exit.

Channel 9 has reported on the dark interstates for months after DOT officials promised to replace 2,000 street lights by last month.

The project has been delayed about three to four months because the DOT had to ask contractors to update their safety plans.

It has not been announced when the lights will be fully installed.
