RICHMOND COUNTY, N.C. — Environmental groups are fighting to prevent the construction of 650 diesel-powered generators at the future Amazon Data Center site in Richmond County.
The Department of Environmental Quality approved two air quality permits last month.
One was for nearly 600 backup generators, and the other was for more than 50 temporary generators that would run 24/7 until the data center had a permanent power supplier.
The legal challenge claims Amazon and Duke Energy improperly filed for separate permits to avoid stricter environmental review.
The companies said the generators will be run separately and for different purposes; therefore, they should have separate permits.
