Mecklenburg County giving out at-home COVID-19 test kits

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Starting Wednesday, Mecklenburg County residents can once again pick up at-home COVID-19 tests for free.

The county is giving them out at the health department on Billingsley Road.

Distribution at county libraries is set to begin again next week.

Previously, Mecklenburg County Public Health announced a delay of the January distribution of free at-home COVID-19 test kits due to winter weather. The new pick up time for testing kits was from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29.

Residents picked up the tests at two locations:

• J.M. Alexander Middle School in Huntersville.
• Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte (distribution will be in the large parking lot on Hebron Street, across from the main campus entrance).

Officials said they will provide up to four COVID-19 tests per household.

The tests are available while supplies last. They will be distributed on a walk-in or drive-up basis. You do not need to make an appointment.

Officials said at-home test kits do not require clinical supervision, so a prescription from a health care provider is not required.
