IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Chairs, tables, and trash were among the remnants of a Halloween party that descended into chaos and gunfire this past weekend in Iredell County.
Four people were shot at the event, and Channel 9’s Dave Faherty learned that investigators believe several people may have fired guns at the party.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office says there were hundreds of people at the party at a barn along Coddle Creek Highway. The majority of the visitors were from Charlotte.
The party was promoted through social media posts like this one calling it the “Sosa After Hours Barn of Terror.”
Maranda Curry showed Channel 9 the empty beer cans outside her home after partygoers parked up and down her neighborhood. She says prior to the shooting, some of those partygoers were drag racing along Highway 3.
“It was already insane at midnight. And everyone in this area was upset with what was going on. Parked up and down the street in my yard. There were crazy people running all over the place. They left trash every where,” Maranda Curry said.
The sheriff’s office estimates there were 200 to 300 people at the event venue east of Mooresville. In the yard around the property, we could see where people discarded bottles of liquor, left food behind and even abandoned a pair of women’s shoes after more than a dozen rounds were fired here. Neighbors say some of the gunfire sounded like it came from an automatic weapon.
Investigators tell us they’ve recovered two firearms but also shell casings from four different weapons.
The sheriff isn’t sure what led to the shooting, adding that the party was made up of 17 to 27-year-olds.
“This is something for parents to know where your kids, a lot of these are 17, 18 and 19-year-olds, not from this area. So just be aware where your children are,” Sheriff Darren Campbell said.
Right across the street, Brittany Westmorland woke to the sound of the gunfire. She says the venue has been used for weddings in the past and there has never been a problem here before.
“My hope is that justice will be served and that the barn can recover. Because it is a nice event center,” Brittany Westmorland said.
According to the social media post, the party was described as an “all-nighter,” with “drinks” provided. The sheriff says other state law enforcement agencies are now assisting with the investigation.
