Behind the scenes: Charlotte FC Spanish broadcasters call games in Telemundo studio

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte FC’s Spanish-language broadcast team calls games from inside Telemundo’s studio at WSOC-TV and shared how they connect the audience to the game despite being dozens of miles away from the action.

Jaime Moreno is one-half of the broadcast team — the play-by-play commentator. He is also the Spanish-language voice for the Carolina Panthers and a veteran broadcaster of more than 30 years and says commentating on games was a passion of his from a young age.

“I remember me going into my backyard and playing games, football or soccer … and I would broadcast it. I get so emotional,” said Moreno.

The other half of the team is color commentator Antonio Ramos, whose career started with Carolina Panthers broadcasts in Mexico.

Now, the dynamic duo brings their excitement for the game to our studio, complementing each other’s knowledge and strengths.

“Jaime is focused on where the ball is going and where the action is flowing ... but me, as a color analyst, I need to watch the other areas of the field where sometimes fans don’t see what’s happening,” said Ramos.

Ramos said the two are much like another famous duo.

“He’s the Batman. I’m the Robin,” said Ramos.

Moreno said the bond between the two is genuine, and that’s what helps them connect to the audience and make up for their distance from the pitch.

“Sometimes I tell him ‘I talk to you more than I talk to my wife,’” said Moreno.

Ramos said he met Jaime and the Spanish-language Panthers crew at a football camp in his hometown in Mexico.

Ramos had a trip planned with his parents for that weekend, but he saw an opportunity to grow his career — and it turned out to be the right move.

It has been seven years since that fateful meeting, and Ramos and Moreno are now known even among English speakers.

“It’s actually even better when you hear some American fans that don’t speak Spanish say ‘Hey, I love these guys, I don’t understand anything they’re saying,” said Ramos.

Moreno said the game is a way to disconnect for many people and connect with the team and “the beautiful game” instead.

“I want to make sure when you connect to us, you’re going to put all of that behind and stay focused with us, and when you go to bed you say ‘what a game,’” said Moreno.

You can hear Moreno and Ramos commentating on every Charlotte FC game on Telemundo Charlotte.

At 5 p.m. on Channel 9, reporter DaShawn Brown sits down to talk to the duo.
