Police: Former military officer showed porn to 11-year-old girl

A former military officer is in jail, accused of showing porn to an 11-year-old girl.

Kevin Meares appeared in court Thursday.

Meares' niece told Channel 9 that this is a misunderstanding. She said Meares was trying to be a good role model, teaching the girl about life.

"It's shocking," said neighbor Coy Hiland.

Hiland saw police take Meares into custody Wednesday.

Channel 9 reporter Ken Lemon told Hiland about the charges.

"It's hard to believe. He just don't seem like that type of a person," he said.

Police said the incident happened in July.

Meares and the girl were driving in Stanley when Meares showed her a five-minute pornographic video clip on his cell phone, police said.

They were just two blocks away from the Stanley Police Department.

Police said the girl went to live with her father in Davie County. She told a friend at school and that conversation led to the investigation.

Investigators said Meares confessed to showing the porn to the girl.

His attorney told the judge Meares has never been in trouble before and asked the judge to lower his bond.

"He is not a flight risk at all," said attorney Brent Ratchford.

The judge cut bail in half to $25,000.

Meares returns to court in about three weeks.
