Channel 9’s next Big 22 Player to Watch is no stranger to hard work. Wide receiver Majay Thompson has had his eye on improvement since long before he strapped on a helmet at Crest High School, and the Chargers get to reap the rewards.

The Florida State-bound pass catcher was nursing an injury when we stopped by practice, and that seems to be the only thing that can slow him down. Majay is the product of years of work in the weight room. In fact, he would have preferred to have started sooner. When he was younger, he would watch his dad leave to work out and count the days until he became a teenager.
“I used to see him go to the gym at Planet Fitness,” Thompson said. “You had to be 13. I was just waiting the whole time. From then on, I was doing stuff in the backyard, running around. I had little training sessions, but I was ready to get in the gym.”
And finally, it was time. Majay was old enough to get in the gym, and the rest, as they say, is history. He developed into one of the top wide receivers in the country, all thanks to a commitment that started early.
“Just love for the game, really at a young age. I feel like if I wanted to be the best of myself, the best I can be,” he said. “Why not start early.”
We’re profiling 22 players every weekday until voting for our five finalists on Sept. 4. Tune into Channel 9 each day to see local stars featured.
