Burke County warns against travel as flooding begins across the area

Burke County Government (BurkeCountyNC)

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A message to residents in Burke County: travel across Burke County is not advised on Sunday morning until daylight allows roadways to be better assessed.

Flooding is being reported in several areas in Burke County.

According to the Burke County Government Facebook page, Lake Rhodhiss is expected to begin spilling around 9 a.m. following significant rainfall, with lake levels potentially exceeding 103.0 feet. Utility operator Duke Energy reported that unpredictable rainfall amounts make it difficult to estimate peak water levels until the storm event concludes.

The rising water at Lake Rhodhiss comes as the Catawba-Wateree River Basin receives increased inflows from recent precipitation. Lake James is also rising and has the potential to spill, creating high water conditions and navigational hazards across the river basin.

Duke Energy cautioned that estimating peak water levels remains difficult while rain continues to fall. “Lake Rhodhiss is expected to begin spilling around 9:00 a.m. today, with lake levels potentially exceeding 103.0 feet early this afternoon,” Duke Energy said.

Upstream, Lake James is experiencing similar water level increases due to rainfall across the regional basin.

Utility officials urged residents living near bodies of water to stay alert and monitor local conditions.

Updated lake level information is available at duke-energy.com/lakes, by calling 800-829-5253, and via the Duke Energy Lake View mobile app.

Duke Energy announced that it will provide further lake and river level updates as weather and water conditions change.
