CHARLOTTE — Members of the Charlotte Fire Department are standing by in case a weather-related emergency pops up that they need to respond to.
On Saturday afternoon, the department took Channel 9 behind the scenes at the Charlotte Fire Operations Center to show us some of the equipment they have on standby.
The center is a huge warehouse and it has everything, including food for the 22 staffers to be self-sufficient for days on end. They can also monitor the progress of the hurricane.
So far they have not gotten any orders to deploy, so their primary mission would be help in the Charlotte area.
Captain Jerry Rodgers leads the task force.
“Examples would be any flood rescue, or a boat was needed even in static water to get people out of residential homes by flooded roads,” he said. “We do have a USR package if your building was to collapse, have a roof blown off, tree come into it, mud slides, anything like that. We’re able to obtain and take care of those.”
The good news is that firefighters are bored. That means there haven’t been any emergencies to respond to.
They’re hoping things stay that way.
