Charlotte City Council to hold first meeting of 2018

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte City Council will hold its first meeting of the year Monday.

The issues City Council face include addressing the rise in violent crime, the affordable housing shortage and a dead-last ranking in economic mobility.

Council members are also expected to award a contract of almost $900,000 to build a new sidewalk in west Charlotte.

The sidewalk would be on Little Rock Road between Tuckaseegee Road and Robert L. Smith Park and be three-quarters of a mile long.

The project is part of the city's effort to improve walking safety and would be completed by the end of the year.

In her first 100 days in office, Mayor Vi Lyles said she wants to make sure anything the city does will help earn trust between her and the communities she's serving.

The federal government is also giving the city more money to help fight terrorism. The Department of Homeland Security is providing the Charlotte Fire Department with a $2.3 million grant.

City officials said the money will be used to fund new hazmat and bomb squad equipment in addition to training.
