Charlotte leaders unveil new AT&T gigabit network

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Internet service just got even faster in Charlotte.

AT&T announced it is rolling out GigaPower, a super-fast network that allows users to download 25 songs in one second.

It didn't waste any time making sure everyone knows the service is now up and running.

This comes months after Google Fiber announced its plans to bring gigabit service to Charlotte.

There's no timetable for when Google's fast service will start. AT&T says Google's announcement had nothing to do with its decision to roll out service that allows customers to download 25 songs in less than a second.

"We've been doing this for 136 years, and we believe we do this better than anyone," said AT&T North Carolina President Venessa Harrison. "But more important, competition is good.”

"Competition is great. Everybody has to raise their game when there's competition around. Everybody gets better," said Charlotte Mayor Dan Clodfelter.

GigaPower will start at $70 a month. There isn't a price for Google Fiber in Charlotte yet, but customers in Austin, Texas, are paying the same price.

Time Warner offers its Ultimate Internet for $65 a month.

Channel 9 asked the mayor if AT&T needed any special equipment to get the service going.

Back in February, City Council approved installing 21 network huts for Google Fiber on city property to facilitate the service.

"AT&T will not need any other approvals to roll out the product.  As they say, they'll be able to offer it to their existing customers now," he said.

Charlotte is now one of 12 markets with gigabit service, with plans to add six more cities.
