CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte man was sentenced to more than a century in prison for a shooting and robbery outside a Monroe DMV office.
Tuesday afternoon, a judge handed down a sentence of 86-105 years against Melvin Luckey, who at 35 years old, will likely die behind bars.
Prosecutors said Luckey was the mastermind behind the plot, which he carried out with his friend and accomplice, Otis Howie Jr.
Howie was tried and convicted in October 2012 for attempted murder and robbery of the victims, Crystal and Robbie Jordan.
"Luckey was the getaway driver, and he provided the firearm that was used to shoot Mrs. Jordan to pieces, and shoot Mr. Jordan in the head," said Union County District Attorney Trey Robison.
The shooting nearly killed Crystal and left a massive facial scar on Robbie, who was shot in the head.
"We consider Mr. and Mrs. Jordan to be medical miracles. By all accounts, she should not be here," Robison said.
Luckey displayed no signs of emotion or remorse during the trial proceedings and gave Channel 9 cameras a "thumbs up" as he was driven away after the sentencing.
Tuesday, jurors heard details about the extent of the Jordans' injuries, the firearms used in the crime, and Luckey's criminal background before convicting Luckey on additional aggravating factors.
Luckey had already been found guilty of conspiracy, robbery and attempted murder on Monday.
Prosecutors called the conviction and sentence bittersweet.
"This case was viewed by myself and my office as unfinished business...this was a murder case without a dead body," Robison said.
Luckey was also ordered to pay the Jordans more than $48,000 in restitution for medical bills.
